The future of Nunavut's skilled workforce are starting their apprenticeship journey today, January 8, 2019, at Sanatuliqsarvik in Rankin Inlet. 

Nunavut Arctic College learners at the School for Construction Trades Sanatuliqsarvik will be taking their Level 1 program in Carpentry, Electrician, Plumbing, Oil Heat Systems or Housing Maintainer over the next 8-10 weeks.  The journey usually starts with apprentices becoming indentured to a supervisor (Journeyperson) and then learning their trade through level courses at an accredited facility; like Sanatuliqsarvik, followed by a period of 10-12 months working alongside their Journeyperson before coming back to the school for the next level of training. 

There are 4-5 level courses in each trade, all of which are followed by apprentice hours under supervision.  At the end of the theory level courses and practical experience gained with their Journeyperson, these Nunavummiut will challenge the inter-provincial red seal exam in their trade to become a certified Carpenter, Electrician, Plumber or Oil Heat Systems Technician.     

 NOTE: Housing Maintainers are Journeypersons but there is currently no inter-provincial red seal in this trade.
