Outstanding Pre-Health Student wins scholarships

Jane Pameolik of Arviat is already off to a fantastic start to her dream of becoming a nurse in Nunavut. The 24-year-old Pre-Health student at Nunatta campus has already won upwards of $10,000 in academic awards and scholarships.

Jane enrolled in the Pre-Health program in September 2020, but her interest in health care began much earlier than that. In high school, her favourite subject was math and she was inspired to attend Nunavut Arctic College because of the minimal number of nurses working in Arviat, where she grew up.

Her goal after completing Pre-Health is to complete NAC’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program and eventually become a neonatal nurse, so that she can work primarily with babies.

Despite her big, bright smile and impressive resume, Jane says that being in college can still be a challenge at times, especially keeping up with all the new concepts she is learning. Not only is she a full-time student, she is also a mother of a young son.

Her advice for other students is to study as soon you can:

“Pick up sticky notes as you learn new terminology; work on assignments right away so you don’t have to rush right before it is due.” Jane also advises others to apply for as many scholarships as they can; “It’ll will definitely help in the long run!”

Jane says the best thing about college so far has been her helpful instructors and meeting the other students who are now her close friends. She said she found out about the scholarships she won from her instructor, Andrew Card, as well as her peers. Jane’s success and passion for health care in Nunavut and caring for her community is inspiring.
