Nursing students at the Health Skills Lab

On Friday, October 16, 2020, the 3rd year students from the Nursing Program at Nunatta campus, experienced and learned for the first time the procedure to insert an IV. The IV (Intravenous cannulation) is a medical process by which a small plastic tube is inserted into a peripheral vein. Venous access can be used for the administration of fluids, medication, and nutrition.

Using the Nunatta Nursing lab’s mannequins, students observed their Nursing Instructor, Tina Ticao, who cautiously explained the procedure step by step and answered different questions. The instructor also gave possible scenarios of “real life” situations. After observing, the students were able to practice the procedures on special mannequins that are used for the purpose of medical training, they used real medical supplies suck as tourniquet band, needles, gauze, and tape, as well as coloured water to resemble the appearance of blood.  

This activity was part of the Nursing curriculum, specifically the Acute Alterations course in the Health Skills lab.
